Over 20 years ago, my husband Paul and I came to Tucson in February to visit his parents, who were living in SaddleBrooke.

It was 75 degrees. There was maybe one little Charlie Brown cloud in the sky. We spent our days outside in shorts and flip-flops, soaking up the sunshine.

Back home in Seattle, where we'd lived for about 15 years, it felt like we hadn't seen the sun in six months. Everything was wet, gray, and gloomy.

And then we came to Tucson.

There's something about being in the sunshine that changes your outlook on life. As Paul's little brother Tom likes to say, "It turns that frown upside down."

When we returned to Seattle, we knew we wanted something different.  Within a week, our house was on the market.  By June, we were living in Tucson!

Once we decided to make the move, we had another big question: Where were we going to live?

We chose Oro Valley because it was close to Paul's parents in SaddleBrooke, and after researching the local schools, we decided it was where we wanted to settle with our kids.

But finding a home from more than a thousand miles away wasn't exactly easy. This was long before virtual home tours and all the technology we have today.

Fortunately, we had Paul's mom!

She became our boots on the ground, driving through neighborhoods, finding homes for rent, taking pictures with her little flip phone, and texting them to us in Seattle.

She even toured homes for us and gave us her very candid opinions about the properties and the people she met along the way.  Eventually, she found a home in the Copper Creek neighborhood of Oro Valley, introduced us to the owner, and we signed a lease.

Just like that, we had a home waiting for us in Tucson.  We didn't have a real estate agent helping us relocate. We had Paul's mom.

And looking back, having someone we trusted who actually lived here made all the difference.
